The launch of the EmpowerHer Cabo Verde programme, part of the Taça das Favelas, was marked by a charity concert held on 21 May at the Portuguese Cultural Centre in the city of Praia. The event brought the public together around music, culture and solidarity, in an atmosphere of celebration and a commitment to the development of Cape Verdean youth.
The show featured performances by Banda Maracanã and the band The Shiver and the Batucadeiras Grupo Amizade, who provided moments of great excitement and celebrated national culture. The event was also attended by the mentors of the young athletes who will represent Cape Verde in the Taça das Favelas, emphasising the importance of female support and inspiration for future participants.
The initiative was organised by CUFA Cabo Verde, in partnership with the Maracanã Cultural and Sports Association, and also served to launch a fundraising campaign via the Pagali platform, with the aim of supporting the Cape Verdean women’s under-18 team’s participation in the 2027 Taça das Favelas international competition in Brazil.
The mission of the EmpowerHer Cabo Verde programme is to strengthen women’s leadership through sport, citizenship, entrepreneurship and financial independence, creating more opportunities for women and young girls in local communities.
During the concert, the organisers highlighted the importance of culture and sport as tools for social transformation, inclusion and empowerment, reaffirming their commitment to preparing and supporting future Cape Verdean leaders.
The event drew to a close in an atmosphere of celebration, sharing and togetherness, leaving behind a message of hope, motivation and confidence in the potential of Cape Verde’s young people.
